Grand Opening - Durham History Hub

The long-awaited opening of the Durham History Hub, first home of the Museum of Durham History, is just two months away, and Museum staff have announced a day-long lineup of activities focused on families.

Durham’s first History Parade will begin at 10 am on East Main Street and march west to the Durham History Hub at 500 West Main St. High school bands, history re-enactors, a women’s roller derby team, VIPs, bagpipers and others will join floats from local businesses and organizations depicting events and people important to Durham’s history, from our tobacco heritage to the 1957 Royal Ice Cream sit-in.

At 11:30am, dignitaries will cut the ribbon officially opening the Hub and its exhibits to the public. And from Noon to 5pm, performers will entertain visitors on two stages with music, from gospel to jazz groups to a barbershop quarter and children’s choir; a jump rope demonstration; modern dance; professional storytelling; and much, much more. Raffles, book-signings by local history authors, plus a caricaturist and clown will be there – all  with a historic twist!  Kids can participate in making rag dolls and churning butter, thanks to Duke Homestead staff.

“There’s something for everyone, especially kids,” said Katie Spencer, Executive Director of the Museum of Durham History, the organization behind the History Hub. “Anyone who’d like to get a first look at the Hub and join in an afternoon of fun should come by. They’ll find a lively, eclectic mix, kind of like Durham itself.”

Food trucks will be on hand, and there is no charge for the event. To learn more, check out the Museum’s website Museum of Durham History or Facebook page.
